Book Spotlight: THE SCORPIO RACES by Maggie Stiefvater

I love beautiful prose. I've been a fan of Maggie Stiefvater ever since I read Shiver (Book 1 of her trilogy, The Wolves of Mercy Falls). So when I picked this up, I had high expectations going in and this book did not disappoint.

Blurb and image from Goodreads:

It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

About the Author:

Maggie Stiefvater used to be a calligraphy instructor, a wedding musician, a technical editor, and equestrian artist. Now she's a full-time writer living in Virgina with her husband and their four dogs. She's also got mad skills as a colored pencil artist. (I worship this woman. :D)

The Book: YA Fantasy

Seriously, read this. Beautiful writing, characters you want to root for, and the haunting atmosphere surrounding the capall uisce (kelpies)... Sigh. I can only wish I can write as well as Ms. Stiefvater. (Fangirling here, yes.) Highly recommended. ;)

I read this a few months ago; I liked it a LOT more than I though I would. It's a wonderful story.

Oddly, I don't like her prose style. But apparently, I'm the only one 'cause she sure is popular.
